Bellevue College to Host Martin Luther King Jr. Day Event Jan. 18

Under the theme, “It Starts with Me: UNITY, commUNITY, opportUNITY,” event organizers have planned a hybrid event between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024. Keynote Dr. Bettina L. Love, an acclaimed author and public speaker, will present and host a book signing for the event.
“The hope is that participants will have self-reflection on their contributions to unity, community, and opportunity,“ Dr. Glenn Jackson, chair of the MLK Jr. Day event planning committee, said.
Rosalynn Jones, a national recording artist from Tacoma, will perform at the event, and Jackson will recite Dr. King’s renowned “I Have a Dream” speech.
About Dr. Bettina L. Love
Love holds a William F. Russell Professorship at Teachers College of Columbia University and is the author of the New York Times bestseller “Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal.”
As a co-founder of the Abolitionist Teaching Network, Love contributes to its mission of nurturing and empowering teachers and parents who fight injustice within their educational institutions and communities. Love is also a founding member of a task force that initiated “In Her Hands,” one of the largest guaranteed income pilot programs in the United States. This program has successfully disbursed over $15 million to support Black women in Georgia.
Love covers a wide range of topics in her speaking engagements, including abolitionist teaching, anti-racism, hip-hop education, Black girlhood, queer youth, educational reparations, and the use of art-based education to foster youth civic engagement.
