Seeking XR Lab Project Proposals for our DMA 294 Students

XR Virtual Example

DMA 294 “XR Development and Client Collaboration”

Course overview

Our XR Development & Client Collaboration courses at Bellevue College aim to equip students with the skills to create immersive and impactful Extended Reality (XR) experiences.

By collaborating with real-world clients, students gain practical experience in project management, client communication, and technical implementation. The courses are offered in collaboration with the BC Digital Media Arts Program and are part of the Northwest XR EDU Network.

About the Northwest XR EDU Network

The Northwest XR EDU is a resource network for educators in the Pacific Northwest and beyond to learn about and create virtual, augmented, and mixed reality tools for teaching and learning. The initiative is made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation, and it seeks to broaden access to XR technologies, enhance instructional quality, and prepare students for the growing industry demands in XR fields.

What is XR?

XR (extended reality) typically refers to augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality.
The Bellevue College XR Lab works with all three of these technologies and currently focuses primarily on using virtual reality. Additionally, the XR Lab includes many immersive interactive flat screen experiences, selected AI tools, and gamification under the XR umbrella.

Project goals

We are seeking project proposals from faculty and staff within our own institution to provide our students with real-world challenges to solve. Local non-profit organizations, such as museums, are also welcome to participate.
We’re seeking projects that are a good fit for XR contexts such as:

  • Hands-on Training: Simulating dangerous or expensive equipment or procedures.
  • Scale Exploration: Visualizing microscopic or astronomical size structures.
  • Creative Expression: Developing artistic and conceptual experiences.
  • Contextual Learning: Enhancing real-world experiences with digital overlays.
  • Collaborative Design: Facilitating remote, real-time design and visualization.
  • Empathy Development: Creating immersive storytelling experiences.
  • Social Interaction: Designing virtual environments for social and collaborative activities.

Please note: Successful projects may be considered for release as Open Educational Resources (OER) on the XR Lab at Bellevue College OER Site, to share knowledge and inspire future learners.

Benefits for participants

By participating in this project, you can:

  • Increase Visibility: Showcase innovative projects and research.
  • Enhance Student Learning: Contribute to practical, real-world education.
  • Leverage XR Technology: Explore cutting-edge tools to enhance teaching and research.

Client expectations

We anticipate that client partners will:

  • Provide a clear project brief: Outlining goals, target audience, and desired outcomes.
  • Be available for regular check-ins: Participate in feedback sessions and meetings.
  • Be open to experimentation and innovation: Embrace new ideas and approaches.
  • Facilitate end-user testing: Provide access to the target audience (e.g., students, museum visitors) for user testing and feedback.

Student deliverables

Students will deliver a high-quality XR project, including:

  • A functional XR application or experience.
  • Comprehensive documentation, including design rationale and technical specifications.
  • A presentation showcasing the project’s impact and learning outcomes.

We look forward to the opportunity to work with you on exciting and impactful XR projects.
