The Northwest XR EDU Network badge

We are excited to announce that the National Science Foundation has awarded the Bellevue College XR Lab a significant grant to create The Northwest XR EDU Network (NWXR EDU).

The XR Lab Provides:

  1. State of the art virtual reality display devices.
  2. Educational software to deliver high-quality interactive learning experiences that are reviewed by instructors and students before implementation in ongoing classroom support.
  3. An open-source networked video conference classroom space that allows students to experience presenters from all over the world, and shared learning experiences with participating educational institutions.
  4. VR equipped demonstration suites and workrooms.

The Story of the XR Lab

The XR Lab started in 2017 when the Library Dean for Bellevue College submitted a request to host James Riggall, an Australian scholar at the College. James received a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence which was funded by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, a part of the US Department of State. Later that year he and Bruce Wolcott co-taught the first full credit class about VR held at Bellevue College. Bruce Wolcott and James Riggall then guided development of BC’s XR Lab in the Library Media Center, and built long-lasting relationships with BC faculty and staff, and external partners.

The XR Lab has been part of the Connected Learning division since 2021, and in Spring 2023 it merged with the Interactive eLearning department. Bruce Wolcott and Ron Austin manage the Lab, and the success of the XR Lab would not be possible without the exceptional work of our student employees and staff.
