Bellevue College’s baseball team is becoming more sustainable. They have already implemented the following in their daily practices:
- They no longer use of the gas powered tractor for preparing field on daily basis; instead they use of manual labor/hand rakes.
- They hand pick weeds and do not use chemicals
- They have decreased mowing time in half
- Biodegradable plates are used in concession stand and for lunches
- They recycle rainwater for reuse
- Finally, they have been vanpooling players to off-campus practice facility
Mark Yoshino, the team’s coach has begun to notice a sense of unity developing between team members during the vanpool trips to off-campus facilities. “Although the tight spacing can make it quite crowded at times!” said Yoshino. The biggest differences that they have noticed since implementing these measures are that it is much more financially efficient! “This has been where we’ve actually seen a difference. mainly in the gas cost by vanpooling and in not running the tractor as much” states Yoshino.
We want acknowledge and applaud the baseball’s team effort in attempting to be more sustainable!
