In order to comply with the federal requirements of The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the College is required to identify and provide training to all positions considered Campus Security Authorities (or CSA’s) in order to maintain accurate reporting of all crimes that occur on within Clery Geography.
It is important that each department provide an updated list of every employee who may be identified as a Campus Security Authority. Each employee that is identified as a CSA is required to complete annual training on Clery reporting requirements.
What is a Campus Security Authority?
A Campus Security Authority (CSA) is:
- Any member of a campus police department or a campus security department of an institution.
- Any individual or individuals who have responsibility for campus security but who do not constitute a campus police department or a campus security department (e.g., an individual who is responsible for monitoring the entrance into institutional property).
- Any individual or organization specified in an institution’s statement of campus security policy as an individual or organization to which students and employees should report criminal offenses.
- An official of an institution who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including, but not limited to, student housing, student discipline and campus judicial proceedings.
What Does a CSA Do?
CSA’s are a vital part of data collection for the Campus Annual Security and Fire Safety Report. Campus Security Authorities are responsible for reporting all crimes that are reported to them that occur within designated geography to the BC Public Safety Office or the college’s Clery Compliance Officer, Public Safety Director Ross Villegas. Information received from CSA’s is critical when determining whether an alert is sent out to the BC community.
CSA’s include but are not limited to:
- Deans
- Student Housing Staff
- Public Safety staff
- Athletic Coaches
- Student Activities Coordinators
- Officials who oversee a student center
- Student Judicial Advisors
- Residents Advisors (RA’s)
- Student Advisors
- Faculty advisors to student organizations
Here are a few examples of positions that may not be considered CSA’s:
- Administrative staff not responsible for student activities (e.g., payroll, facilities)
- Non-Public Safety clerical staff
- Individual faculty who DO NOT serve as advisors to registered student organizations
- Counselors in the Counseling Center who provide privileged and protected sessions to individual students
