Physics is highly structured knowledge so all of our classes will expect you to proceed through the material according to the structure provided by your instructor. There can be significant variability in how synchronous/asynchronous your class will be, but all classes will present a schedule that culminates in one or more mid-terms. You will not be able to create the needed structured knowledge by studying the night before so even the most asynchronous course does not allow you delay your learning for any extended period. Regular progress through the material is expected in all of the classes below. The courses below fall into one of three categories:
Largely asynchronous: Few or no required meeting times when all students must attend (except for exams). Assignments may have fixed due dates that all students must meet. The overall workload* is similar to the standard on-ground course nationally (21-25 hours/week).
Occasionally Synchronous: Class will meet synchronously on a few occasions (perhaps every other week)for common laboratory work, or group learning. Most of the course content will be presented asynchronously but assignments may have fixed due dates that all students must meet. Regularly or frequently synchronous: Class will meet synchronously on some or many days each week for common laboratory work, or group learning. This could be as little as once per week, or as often as daily. Some of the course content will be presented asynchronously and but assignments may have fixed due dates that all students must meet. The overall workload* is similar to the standard on-ground course nationally (21-25 hours/week). *workload estimates vary considerably from student to student. This estimate assumes a successful (B+ or better) student, with solid math skills, who has the full prerequisite background for these courses. Other students may require a greater time commitment than this.
Lab Kits
As noted in the course descriptions on the college web page laboratory activities will be supported by modest laboratory kits containing (in many cases) simple materials. This has been done to allow the department to meet a minimum of laboratory learning objectives and assure a common preparation of students as they proceed through the sequence. Lab kits are a new venture for the BC physics department and as a result deployment has come later than we expected. We regret not having all the information available earlier in the registration process. However, our experiences in spring and summer quarters demonstrated that we could not expect students to all have even common objects at home, and providing a common basis for further instruction and the legitimate awarding of laboratory credit required another approach. You will be able to rent the kit through the bookstore by searching for your course. Kit purchase information may not be posted by the bookstore before Monday September 21.

This class modality will be asynchronous as everyone currently registered selected that version of the course. I will deliver the lectures through Canvas along with a schedule for keeping up with the material as well as office hours. In addition I will post a schedule for the creation of new or replacement lectures when these occur which you are free to attend “live” this would then give you the opportunity to ask questions during lecture. A webcam and microphone will be required for infrequent live meetings. These are occasional check-ins so that we can get to know one another and to conference about course progress.
