Students enrolled in Cultural Awareness recently each crafted a poem about what makes them who they are. They shared their poems with each other in class to get feedback and created a final draft ready to display at this fall quarter’s upcoming Share Night.
Students begin their work in Cultural Awareness by looking inward at the cultures that helped shaped them. Later we will look at other cultures we will encounter at school, in the community, and in the workplace. We will work on ways to make connections and build relationships across cultures and to deal with misunderstandings that may arise. Having a sense of where we come from is a building block in cultural awareness and social thinking that is so important in the community and in the workplace.
Some students may think they are not poets, but each “I am from” poem is beautiful and helps us get to know the author in a new way.
Below is Cassidy’s poem:
“I am from dog owner.
I am from woman and from disability community.
I am from American and ¼ Irish.
I am from expert jigsaw puzzle doer.
I am from my grandparents and parents.
I am from “It’s better to be safe than sorry”
I am from swing set and jungle gym.
I am from The World’s Most Precious Baby and Hawaii ABC Book.
I am from 4th of July and from Thanksgiving.
I am from Halloween and from Christmas.
I am from Mercer Island community.
I am from Transition Program. (now called Adult Transition Program)
I am from TV watcher and video game player.
I am from laptop user.
I am from friends and classmates.
I am from independent lunch maker.
