First year students enrolled in Intro to Communications recently participated in a group activity to identify and explore communication styles in various contexts and environments. Knowing how to communicate with people in the right context for a given situation is an important skill, as there are often unspoken rules and standards that are just expected. This activity introduced the idea that language/communication varies by context, and that it’s important to understand that what might be acceptable and expected in one setting may not be appropriate in another.
Students worked together to brainstorm ideas by creating lists, drawing pictures, or acting out the different ways one might communicate with friends, family, and professional contacts such as employers, teachers, and interviewers in various situations such as saying hello or goodbye, asking for help, emailing or texting, and showing excitement. In addition to verbal language (i.e.: tone of voice), students also explored non-verbal language (body language, facial expressions, behavior).
The students enjoyed working in groups and utilizing poster paper to write out their ideas. Everyone got to see the unique responses from each group.
Intro to Communications is one of the many courses OLS Students take to obtain their associate degree from OLS. More information about our curriculum is available on our website. To learn more about our program register for an Information Session.
