Students in the OLS Radio Theater course participated in a community activity producing a pair of short radio plays at Jack Straw Studios, a non-profit arts & education center in the University District.
Prior to the activity students listened to a variety of radio dramas and created their own, collaborating in groups of five. In addition to creating the plays they also figured out what different sound effects they would need, along with ways to “foley” these (create the sounds live, using household objects).
Jack Straw’s professional voice coaches helped the students create the specific way they wanted each character to sound. They also trained our group on the importance of good posture and breathing, in order to speak clearly and distinctly. Standing at the microphones with headphones on, they could hear the difference immediately.
Once the plays were recorded, the students worked directly with the studio’s engineers to make choices about editing and mixing the finished mini-dramas.
Both plays are about two minutes long, and were presented to the OLS community. Many of the students remarked on how “cool” their day was at a recording studio.
Radio Theater is one of the many courses OLS Students take to obtain their associates degree from OLS. More information about our curriculum is available on our website. To learn more about our program register for an upcoming Information Session.
