During the first week of each quarter, OLSBC students spend time creating classroom norms in each of their courses. These student-driven course norms help build a sense of community and belonging in the classroom and set the tone for the course by providing clear guidelines on how to behave and be successful.
Students in the Fall Quarter Intro to Computers course collaborated in small groups, working as a team to develop ideas for their classroom norms. Students then presented their group’s ideas to the rest of the class. They spent time after all presentations to discuss ideas they felt may be missing, allowing for valuable input from the entire class and ensuring that the ideas were comprehensive and relevant to everyone.

Creating classroom norms is a part of every course in the OLSBC program. This exercise helps students understand what is expected of them as they interact and engage in class. However, rather than expectations being dictated by their instructor, OLS course norms are student-driven, meaning the students play an active role in shaping the atmosphere. It also helps them feel valued and supported by instructors and peers.
Classroom norms are specific to every OLSBC course. While themes of respect and kindness remain universal, there are also ideas added based on the course topic, activities and outcomes. Beyond learning about the course’s subject matter, students in the OLSBC program also engage in relationship-building, teamwork and being a part of a supportive learning community.
