Living and going to school in the Pacific Northwest means hearing a lot about the Cascadia Subduction Zone and being prepared for “The Big One.” We know the importance of being prepared in case of an emergency, whether that’s an earthquake or other emergency that requires people to be prepared to live without the resources they rely on every day.
Students enrolled in the Environment and Our Community course spent time this quarter learning about emergency preparedness with a little help from the Bellevue Fire Department. One of their firefighters, Heather, attended class as a guest speaker, and students used the information she presented to create their own home emergency preparedness plan. Students used their critical thinking, social thinking, and self-determination skills to put their plans together, and they shared this information with the OLS community.
As important as emergency preparedness is, students had a lot of fun with this activity, and now they are better prepared members of their communities.
Environment & Our Community is one of the many courses OLS Students take to obtain their associate degree from OLS. More information about our curriculum is available on our website. To learn more about our program register for an Information Session.
