The Impact of Small Acts of Kindness

During Fall Quarter, the students in the Occupational & Life Skills Bellevue College (OLSBC) Mindfulness course studied focusing on how to be aware of the present moment, to use their breath to reset their nervous system when feeling anxious or stressed, and how to do small steps to be kind to themselves and others. Students studied the science of how these acts of self-care make a big difference in wellbeing and ability to handle the changes of being in the first quarter of a new college.

To practice how even small acts of kindness can be uplifting and ripple out to impact others, we teamed up with Heather Rane from the BC Kindness Affinity Group to make Kindness Rocks for our campus.

The session with Heather gave us an opportunity to use art and inspiration to share kind and positive messages. Students had a great session experimenting with color and design to create a wide range of Kindness Rocks messages.

This was a great opportunity for our students to practice open mindedness and adaptability during a new activity. Students were engaged and able to share talents for creative expression.

Once the rocks were dry and sealed, students took them out to the BC Kindness Rock Garden so their messages can be shared with the community. You can find them just outside of A101 near the BC fountain!
