The summer quarter is busy for the Occupational & Life Skills Bellevue College (OLSBC) program. While the program’s courses take a break until the fall, our program stays busy through summer volunteering!
OLSBC Summer Volunteering

OLSBC offers students entering their final year in our program the opportunity to volunteer with us over the summer. Summer volunteering provides students the opportunity to expand on their work skills, utilize their strengths and work with a group to accomplish a common goal in a team environment. They report to their supervisor daily and check in as they accomplish their tasks. This is a great way for our students to practice work experience in a real-world context.
In the summer of 2024, the program partnered with two organizations. One was Tilth Alliance, an organization that works in community with Washington farmers, gardeners and eaters to build a sustainable, healthy and equitable food future. Student volunteers accomplished a variety of work, such as:
- caring for and watering trees and plants
- weeding and maintaining a garden
- learning about plants, the environment and the hard work it takes to grow food sources
Plus, Zachary made a double chocolate zucchini cake from a zucchini grown in the garden!

OLSBC also partnered with the Jubilee Reach thrift store, assisting with straightening and tidying clothing, books, toys and shoes. They also learned to look for the next place that needed to be organized to ask questions when they weren’t sure what to do and to commit time to work.
