OLS Bellevue College Students Practice Personal Finance Skills

Two OLSBC students practicing personal finance

What’s your favorite breakfast item on the Taco Bell Menu, and what does it cost?

That’s the question students taking the OLSBC Personal Finance course had to answer for one of their course activities. In this activity, students worked in small groups to practice their communication and money management skills.

Each student had a budget (a small amount of mock money) to order breakfast from a Taco Bell menu while one of their peers played the role of a cashier. They practiced understanding how much things cost and how to make change, how to save and spend money, compute sales tax, tip and understanding that working or getting an allowance are ways to earn more.

Student Comments:

  • I enjoyed being a cashier; I got to practice taking and giving money back. I would like to work at Starbucks someday.
  • I got to order food and count money. It was fun to practice being a cashier at Taco Bell.
  • Learning about cash since sometimes I can’t use my debit card.
  • I liked to select different food. I get anxious when ordering food, so it was fun to practice with my friends.
