Learning how to stay within a budget is an important skill to have when you take charge of your personal finance. One important category that can be particularly tricky to stay within your budget on is groceries. How do you determine how much is adding up in your cart, especially when many produce and bulk items are priced based on weight and other items are per unit? How do you determine what items on your list are needed and what can wait for another day?
Our students are learning how to answer those questions as part of their Personal Finance course. They spent time in groups identifying Unit Price and Unit of Measure for various items and headed to Fred Meyer with a list to items, a budget of $25, and the task of determining what items they could buy from their list while staying in budget.
Here’s some advice from our students for anyone interested in learning how to stay within a budget when shopping for groceries:
- Understand what the unit price is for items on your list
- Spend time deciding what items have the best value
- Don’t shop hungry so you don’t impulsively buy items you don’t need
- Prioritize items on your list
- Think ahead about what you need
Personal Finance is one of the many courses OLS Students take to obtain their associate degree from OLS. More information about our curriculum is available on our website. To learn more about our program register for an Information Session.
