Students taking the Environments and our Community course fall quarter were visited by Sapan from the RISE Institute who taught them how to make plarn: yarn made from plastic bags. The plarn is used to make mats for an agency RISE is currently partnering with called Facing Homelessness, an organization focused on supporting people living on the streets. It takes about 800-900 plastic bags to make one mat. What a great way to reuse plastic bags and keep them out of the landfill.
As you can see, students had a wonderful time making the plarn and contributing to their community.
Environment and Our Community is one of the many courses OLS Students take to obtain their associate degree from OLS. More information about our curriculum is available on our website. To learn more about our program register for an Information Session.
