Open digital badges are images that symbolize specific achievements, benchmarks, or experiences and contain detailed, verifiable metadata. These badges are easily displayed on social media and other platforms. Canvas offers an integrated digital badging tool known as Canvas Credentials (formerly Badgr), making it convenient to manage and display these achievements. Read more about “What Open Badges are” on Instructure | Community FAQ.
For Faculty:
Getting started with Badges for Faculty
Step 1: If you don’t already see Credentials in your left hand course navigation you will want to go to Settings and choose the Navigation tab. Find and enable Credentials. Be sure to save!
Step 2: Log into Canvas Credentials (Badger). You may need to register before being able to sign in. This is not linked to your Single Sign On (SSO) but you should use your Bellevue College email address to register.
Creating an Issuer
To set up badging in a Canvas course, you must create an Issuer on the Canvas Credentials (Badgr) site. This Issuer will be personal and not tied to the college. The Issuer information will appear on the Issuer’s public page and be part of each badge awarded by this Issuer. Keep in mind that recipients can share badges publicly, so choosing a descriptive name is important.
Important Notes:
- Include Bellevue College in your Issuer name so that students can easily identify course badges awarded by Bellevue College instructors. For example: Prof. Olson – Bellevue College.
- For the Issuer URL, consider using a website that highlights your status as an instructor. Suitable options include your department’s faculty and staff page, the campus directory, or your LinkedIn profile.
Step 1: Please follow the steps provided by Instructure | Community to set up a Personal Issuer in Canvas Credentials.
Step 2: Proceed to your Canvas course. Select Credentials on your left-hand course navigation in Canvas. Enter your email and receive a verification code. Choose your Personal Issuer and choose select issuer.
Note: When adding a badge to a Canvas course, a Group consisting of the students enrolled in your course is created. We recommend setting the Group’s expiration date to the course completion date. This ensures that badges cannot be awarded after the course has ended.
Creating a Badge
Please create your badges from within the Canvas Credentials site where you set up your Personal Issuer.

You can also turn on the Leaderboard which can be a visual representation of achievements and rankings that keeps students engaged and invested in the course as they strive to achieve higher scores and recognition. To see how to use this feature visit How do I use the Leaderboard in Badges as an instructor?
Note: The Leaderboard can be set to Anonymous to avoid sharing student names.
