Strong Start to Fall Quarter
OLS has started the year strong! Our students are getting into the rhythm of campus and participating in all kinds of activities, including voting in the fabulous Skeleton Contest at the Library!
OLS hosted our first Service Project of the year on Nov. 1. We have not gathered as a program to work on Service Projects since the pandemic started. This has always been a big tradition in our program as a way to promote community, citizenship, and a sense of belonging. On this occasion, we partnered with Full Life Care to create greeting cards that would be distributed to elderly, veterans, and people with disabilities living alone. They received our cards together with a Thanksgiving dinner! Around 35 students attended the event and we made 100 cards!
Presentation at Council for Exceptional Children
In other news, OLS internship program manager Jessica Salak presented at this fall’s Council for Exceptional Children conference in Reno. Several people signing up for OLS information sessions have referred to the conference. This shows that Jess did a great job and represented our program well!
Way to go, Jess!
Sad News
Finally, as a program we gathered together to mourn the loss of an OLS student who died in August. Because of the timing of her passing, many students missed her memorial service.
We felt the need to mourn this loss as a community. On Oct. 27 we held a brief ceremony at the fountain courtyard and we installed a brick in her honor on the ground. Students and faculty had a chance to say a few words about Darrianne, and her parents also came to be with us and share stories about her. Losing a student is hard. They leave a mark in your heart.
