The Bellevue College Bulldogs baseball team opened up their first weekend series of Northern divisional play with a four-game sweep of Olympic College. The weekend schedule was altered with a Saturday rain cancellation, so Sunday games moved to Rainier Beach High School, and Monday make-ups at RAC Sports Complex in Lacey. All in all, the formula worked for the Bulldogs.
In game one on Sunday, April 1, Bellevue came out on top in a seven inning, 2-1 pitcher’s duel. Adrian Sampson improved to 5-0 with another quality outing allowing just one run on three hits. Sampson also struck out 12 batters increasing his season total to 51, which leads the NWAACC. Marc Dickerson had an RBI double and Willy Reel provided the go-ahead solo homerun for the Bulldogs. Colin Hering penciled in a 3-4 game at the plate.
In game two, Bellevue’s offense paved the way posting 10 runs on 11 hits. Dustin Breshears, Alex Ross, Dae Lee, and Max Brown each had two hits in the game. Jonathan Humphrie made the start on the hill tossing five innings earning his first victory of the season.
On Monday, April 2, in game three of the Olympic College series, the Bulldog offense was able to plate only one run, which was enough for freshman starter Bryan Burgher who threw a compete game, a two-hit shutout guiding Bellevue to the 1-0 win. In the final game of the series, Bellevue’s pitching and offense worked together like clockwork. Jeff Gonzales earned the win throwing five innings, allowing no runs on just two hits. Scott Kuzminsky and Steven Johnson each worked an inning of relief without allowing a hit. The offense provided 12 runs on 11 hits highlighted by a perfect 3-3 game by Ross and a 3-5 game from Hering, including five RBIs and his first homerun of the season. The Bulldogs cruised to a 12-0 victory (seven innings by run-rule).
With the first series in the books, BC finds themselves at the top of the division with a 4-0 league record (18-3 overall). The Bulldogs will head north of the border for a double header with Douglas College in Canada on Friday, April 6, at Queen’s Park in New Westminister.
