This past weekend, the #1 ranked Bellevue Bulldogs had a four-game series with the #3 ranked Edmonds Tritons. With a great amount of hype leading into the weekend due to the history of the Edmonds and Bellevue rivalry, the series did not disappoint.
On Saturday, April 28, the first two games of the series were played on Bellevue’s home turf, Courter Field. In game one, Edmonds out-dueled Bellevue picking up a 3-2 victory. Freshmen Max Brown and Dustin Breshears each had two hits, but the Bulldogs just couldn’t catch a break. In game two, the Edmonds offense exploded posting 12 runs on 18 hits. Tritons never looked back. Bellevue was able to plate four runs over the final five innings of play, but by this point the game was out of reach.
On Sunday, April 29, the Bulldogs, down two games to none, were battle tested for the first time all year. In game three of the weekend series, Adrian Sampson took the hill for Bellevue, but Edmonds continued to impress taking a 4-2 lead going into the seventh and final inning of play. However, this day, the Bulldogs were not going to go down without a fight. After a lead-off solo homerun by Breshears, a Colin Hering single and a Will Minice walk, capped by Brady Kerr’s two RBI single, the Bulldogs found themselves with a 5-4 lead. After Sampson recorded the first out of the seventh, Jonathan Humphrie closed out the game picking up the save and secured the win. The win improved Sampson’s record on the season to a perfect 9-0. In game four, the Dogs looked to finish the series in hopes of a split. They did just that, in dramatic fashion. Nine innings was not enough as it was tied 6-6 after regulation. In the tenth inning of play, the Bulldogs scored two runs to take an 8-6 lead. Humphrie was called on again to close the game and after one and 1/3 innings of work, Humphrie picked up the win. Jerad Casper guided the Bulldogs on offense going 3-4 with three RBIs.
With the split, Bellevue edges Edmonds for second place in the North Division with a league record of 15-5 (29-8). The Everett Trojans currently sit in first place at 13-3 (21-8) and just behind Bellevue in third is Edmonds at 11-5 (22-10). The weekend of May 5-6, Bellevue takes on Skagit Valley in the final series of regular season play for the Bulldogs, with the following week being a bye. North Division foes Everett and Edmonds are set to play four games in two weeks. On Saturday, May 5, the Bulldogs head to Skagit Valley for a 1:00 p.m. start of a doubleheader, then return home to Courter Field Sunday, May 6, for the final home games starting again at 1:00 p.m. You can track the season at www.pointstreak.com.
