Bellevue College baseball had three tough luck losses this weekend as the Bulldogs lost all four games at Lower Columbia. Bellevue had the lead in three of the four, but the bullpen pitching, anchored mainly by freshmen arms, could not hold the lead as the Red Devils took advantage of walks and pitchers falling behind in the count to assist in their heroic comebacks. BC fell 10-9 and 6-3 on Fri. Feb. 21 before losing 6-3 and 8-7 on Tue. Feb. 25; both come-from-behind wins.

In the Friday opener, Bellevue had a 9-2 lead in the seventh inning before surrendering eight runs in the final three frames. Noah Fields, a transfer from Tacoma CC who has had plenty of experience playing Lower Columbia as they are in the same region, started off a hot weekend with four hits and four RBI’s. Dylan Skolfield went three innings in the start and gave up no earned runs in the no decision.

In the Friday nightcap, Bellevue’s Tristan Aasland, the NWAC’s top returning pitcher by numbers, was rusty out of the gate throwing 65 pitches in two innings, but departed with the game tied at 3-3. Tyson Schertenleib homered and had three RBI’s for the ‘dogs.

The series continued after a three day break to avoid the heavy rains on Tue. Feb. 25.

In the opener, Bellevue starting pitcher Terry Hayes Jr. was electric for his third consecutive start surrendering one hit in three innings of work. Departing with a 2-1 lead, the Red Devils got to BC’s bullpen in the middle innings to squeak out the win. Fields continued his hitting rampage with a three-for-four outing.

In the series finale, Fields again paced the BC offense with two hits, two RBI’s and a home run but five free passes by Bellevue’s bullpen arms in the pivotal sixth inning allowed Lower Columbia to stage their comeback.
