Bellevue College men’s basketball went 1-1 this weekend at the Bulldog Classic, Bellevue’s annual invitational held at Courter Family Athletic Pavilion. The four team tourney featured Bellevue, Tacoma, Walla Walla, and the Washington Athletic Club.
Bellevue opened up the tourney on Friday with a 91-75 win over the Washington Athletic Club. Bellevue put up 47 points in the first half as the lackluster defense by the veteran Athletic Club allowed Bellevue to shoot 51% from the field. Max Mayo had four steals in the first half and three assists and had eight points in the productive first half.
After cashing in on seven three pointers in the first half, Bellevue moved to inside the perimeter more for scoring in the second half as Isaiah White was six-for-eight with five assists for 13 points. He finished with a team-high 18.
Saturday’s results were not as favorable as Tacoma downed BC 95-88. Fouls by the ‘dogs gave Tacoma countless opportunities to keep the lead as the Titans were sent to the line a whopping 40 times in the game, cashing in on 35 of them for 88%. Tacoma started early at the foul line sinking 13-of-14 in the first half as they staked a 46-38 lead. Bellevue had the lead early on and were neck and neck with Tacoma through 15 minutes of play until the Titans began to extend in the final minutes leading up to halftime.
The Titans maintained double digit leads through the second half and stretched the lead to over 20 midway through as the Bulldog fouls continued, allowing Tacoma to assume control for the majority of the half without any legitimate threat of a comeback by the ‘dogs.
White was the solid performer for BC in the game with 25 points on 10-for-1 shooting and led the team also with five assists. More importantly White was also the lone starter to not fight foul trouble all night, committing only two personal fouls.
Bellevue, with it’s second loss of the season to Tacoma, fell to 3-5 and will take time off for academic finals before traveling to Aberdeen for the Grays Harbor Crossover Tourney next Fri. Dec. 13. The Bulldogs open up with Linn-Benton at 5 p.m.
