Volleyball Gets Win at Whatcom

Bellevue College volleyball shook off some rust late in the four-set match at Whatcom, winning 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 13-25, 25-23). Bellevue looked to be in control after winning the first two sets and increasing their hit percentage to .242 with 13 kills but took a step backwards in set three, committing seven errors and hitting at a .034 clip. The rust was evident as the ‘dogs committed 19 errors on swings, eight errors at the serve line and 12 in serve receive. The 12 Whatcom aces kept the Orcas alive in sets three and four before the ‘dogs finally gutted out the final set.

In set four, the ‘dogs were up 19-14 before the Orcas made a charge with four straight points off two BC errors and two aces by Whatcom’s Joslyn Sipma. With both team trading blows, set four came down to 24-23 Bellevue before Jessi Mahler sealed it with a kill off a Mandi Nottingham set.

Freshman right side Karisa Martin had the cleanest night for Bellevue, hitting .409 and led the way with 13 kills.

The Bulldogs are now 4-1 and 19-5 overall and will host their longtime rival Edmonds on Wed. Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
