Bellevue College baseball split a pair of doubleheaders with third-ranked Everett, losing 4-2 before winning 10-5 on Saturday and falling 5-1 before taking the nightcap series finale on Sunday 6-1.

The Bulldogs, with their fourth starter, Bryan Sfanos, on the mound against Everett’s ace Wyatt Queen, put the Trojans in panic mode by jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Three singles by Brandon McKinley, Tyson Schertenleib, and Konnor Sutton got the ‘dogs on the board. Everett clutched up with hits on their own to take the lead by getting two off Sfanos in the fifth, and another two off reliever Chase Archibald in the sixth. Sfanos was a weapon offensively as well with two hits.

In game two, Sfanos had two more hits along with Drew De La Cruz and Jackson May as Bellevue plated four runs in the fourth and the big blow a five-run sixth as Everett went through seven pitchers in the game.

In game three at Everett, the Trojans’ Ethan Hubbell was too much to handle as the sophomore righty struck out eight without a walk in the win. BC reliever Drew Welk turned Trojan heads with three shutout innings of relief with four strikeouts and no walks. The freshman had the breaking ball going, tossing it for 84% strikes in his outing.

In the finale, R’Mani Adams turned in his biggest game of the year when the Bulldogs needed it the most to salvage a series split by going deep into the sixth inning while surrendering only one run. JT Rican entered and tossed 3.1 scoreless innings and gave up only one hit. Bellevue put up six runs in the first two innings to gain momentum early. Bellevue put up five runs with two outs in the second as Sfanos and Ryker Fortier each had two-RBI hits and had help from Schertenleib and Ollie Hogan who had singles as well.

Bellevue not only gave the Trojans their first loss in league play, but put themselves into a solid position for post-season play by vaulting into second place with only two more league series to go. The ‘dogs take on Edmonds this weekend, weather permitting. Saturday’s home doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. with Bellevue president, Dr. David May, scheduled to throw out the opening pitch.
