
Bellevue College women’s basketball rode a hot 24-11 first quarter start to defeat visiting Whatcom 75-57 at Courter Family Athletic Pavilion. Bri Byrnes scored 23 points, had nine rebounds, and six steals on the defensive end to lead BC. Gwen Aasland and McKayla Rodriguez had five and four rebounds respectively in the first quarter to pave the way for Bellevue’s 20 shot attempts which led to the easy win. Aasland’s aggressiveness underneath early on triggered an impressive night by the sophomore, ending with a team-high 17 rebounds along with 15 points.
Although the ‘dogs held the lead throughout the game, Whatcom managed to get somewhat within striking distance early in the fourth quarter on a bucket by Jewel Wilson to cut the Bellevue lead to 56-50. Aasland responded for the Bulldogs with a bucket at which point the ‘dogs never got threatened again.
Bellevue is now 6-4 (14-8 overall) with a two-game cushion for the fourth and final berth to the NWAC Championships. The Bulldogs host Everett this Sunday Feb. 19 at noon.
