Women’s Golf Takes Olympic Invite

Bellevue College’s women’s golf team took home their second consecutive team title and third overall this year by shooting 232; 16 strokes better than their nearest opponent en route to the Olympic Invite title held at Gold Mountain Golf Course.

After day one, Bellevue found itself on top by only three strokes over Skagit Valley. The Bulldogs responded on day two with clutch play, as BC’s top three scorers all improved their scores on the final day to widen the lead to 17 strokes.

Sarah Lawrence, who played in a dramatic shootout with Skagit’s Frances Monahan in the final pairing, came through with a final round 74 to come from behind to take the medalist title. Monahan, who shot the low round of 76 on day one of the tourney, was two up on Lawrence heading into the final round. After a rough start Monahan found herself behind Lawrence after a six shot swing over the first four holes, but then rebounded back by going birdie-eagle on the fifth and sixth holes to battle back to a tie. On the back nine, the two battled back and forth with Monahan appearing to be in control by going two-under through the middle holes 12 through 16 with the entire Skagit men’s team following each hole rallying Monahan. With the gallery loudly supporting Monahan, Lawrence briefly crumbled by going into the water on the par 3 16th taking double bogey before coming through on the final two holes. After striping the fairway on the narrow 17th, Lawrence stuck her approach 12 feet from the flag to par. Up by only two strokes on the final hole, the risk-reward 235 yard par 4, Lawrence made a bold move by taking the risk and pulling out her driver. She promptly launched her drive right on line over the flag and got up and down for birdie to seal the win.

Tori Berger finished strong with a one-over par 37 on the back nine to shoot 77; four strokes better than her opening round 81. She took third overall. Ashley Clark also improved on day two by shooting 84-81 over the two days to finish fifth overall.

Bellevue plays next at the Highline Invitational at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club this Sunday and Monday April 25-26.
