On September 29th, the Bellevue College men’s soccer team also played a match against Olympic College. It was a unique match as Coach Sasha Shefts made many substitutions once again. In the first half, Bellevue’s Andy Fordyce scored two goals (21’ and 35’) and RJ Sorensen scored a goal at 22’. The attack came against a dangerous style of play by Olympic, condensing the field, trying to trap the Bulldogs according the Shefts. At half-time, nine players were substituted and again, BC showed what luxuries they have with the depth of their roster. The Bulldogs continued to attack Olympic aggressively scoring four goals in the second half. Luiggi Montero contributed two goals within a minute of each other (70’ and 71’), while Tsutomu Ando (65’) and Esteban Reyes (88’) polished off the scoring to end the game. “The boys just went out and played soccer without worrying about the other team.” Olympic, meanwhile, accumulated five yellow cards to Bellevue’s one during the match. Shefts was quick to point out the opponent was clearly frustrated at the outcome.
In the second match of the week for the men’s team, Pierce College’s Femi Akinniyi scored early against the home team in the 11th minute. However, that goal may have been prevented had the Bulldogs been able to start one of their two regular goal keepers. Forward Luiggi Montero started the game in goal because the Bulldogs’ goal keepers arrived late. Shefts adjusted the game plan accordingly to help Montero as the team weathered the storm. All three goals for BC came in the last ten minutes of the game just in time to win 3-1. RJ Sorensen, Esteban Reyes, and captain Josh Strasser scored to give the Bulldogs a 3-2-0 record in league play. Reyes’ goal came on a free kick. They are currently 3rd in the west division of the NWAACC standings. Overall, “it was a very physical game and the team showed great character in this win” said Shefts. The men’s team is ranked 6th in the Horizon Air Coaches’ Poll as of Sept. 29th. The next poll will be released on October 13th. They are second in the NWAACC in goals scored at 28 behind only Chemeketa and have allowed the second least goals at nine, behind Clark College.
