Bulldog Women Go 2-1 at North Idaho Crossover

Bellevue College’s women’s basketball team wrapped up their pre-holiday competition in fine fashion with a 2-1 record at the competitive North Idaho Crossover in Couer d’ Alene, ID which wrapped up yesterday. The highlight of the weekend was a 77-73 win over previously unbeaten Umpqua (OR) on Monday. The Riverhawks were runner-up last year at the NWAC Championships and were ranked second in last week’s Under Armour NWAC Coaches’ Poll.

On Sunday in the squad’s tourney opener, Bellevue pulled away in the fourth quarter in what was a close game against South Puget Sound, winning 58-50. Amanda Luckett was 10-for-12 and led the team with eight rebounds and 20 points to lead the way. On Monday, Bellevue’s upset night over Umpqua, Natalie Amos had a career night pouring in 40 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Amos was 12-of-15 from the line as BC was red-hot in the fourth quarter, storming back from a deficit to outscore Umpqua 27-17 to pull off the win. The Riverhawks had a chance down by two in the final minute, but two costly turnovers in the last 30 seconds of play doomed Umpqua and paved the way for Bellevue. Yesterday, BC was cold from the start, this time against #6 ranked North Idaho, falling 64-49. The Bulldogs fell behind 19-5 on 2-for-17 shooting in the first quarter and could never recover.

Bellevue is now beginning to reap the benefits of a very tough pre-season schedule which dates back to their season opener in Salt Lake City, UT. The ‘dogs have now beaten multiple NWAC powerhouses with a roster comprised of primarily all freshmen. Bellevue now takes a break and will continue non-league action against Vancouver Island University on December 27. The game will be played at a neutral site, Northwest University in Kirkland at 4:00 p.m.
