Bulldogs Baseball Split in Battle of Defending Champions

In a matchup between the past two NWAACC champions, Bellevue College split a doubleheader Saturday March 16 against Pierce College winning 6-5 before losing the nightcap 8-4.  In the midst of cold, rain, sun, and heavy winds, the game was initially cancelled by the umpires before the first pitch before Pierce’s Head Coach and former BC alum, Kevin Davis convinced the umpiring crew that the field would be playable. The game began, and then was hit again with a 30-minute rain delay after two innings of play. After jumping out 1-0, Pierce then lost momentum after the delay, giving up five Bulldog runs. Singles by Dewald DeKlerk and Aaron Stroosma got Bellevue on the board to give Bellevue a 2-1 lead. The ‘dogs would go up 5-1 before giving up four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bellevue responded in the sixth inning as Jordan Richartz doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Dae Kyun Lee. Brandon Mahovlich shut down Pierce’s offense with two innings of shutout pitching to seal the win.

In game two, Bellevue jumped out 1-0 but lost momentum as Pierce tagged Bellevue’s pitchers for multiple run innings in the second, fifth, and eighth innings to preserve an 8-4 win. Bellevue’s biggest opportunity came in the eighth inning as four consecutive batters got on base with no outs. The Bulldogs could only come up with one run in that inning. Richartz continued his hot hitting with another three hits. Stroosma added two.

Bellevue is now 7-3 as they head into finals week and the their final weekend of non-league play as they return to Pierce the weekend of March 23-24 for the Pierce-Tacoma Invite.
