The Bellevue Bulldogs beat the Everett Trojans Wednesday night Sept. 21 at Everett in three 25-12, 25-19 and 25-17. Bulldog setter Anna Thostenson had 34 assists in the match with 11 digs and 3 aces. The Bulldog offense was led by outside hitter Laura Friar with 13 kills followed by middle blocker Sammy Minnig with 10 kills and right side McKenzie Graf with 4. Libero Tiva Akau lead the Bulldog defense with 15 digs followed by Friar with 14 and defensive specialist Morgan de Carteret with 10 digs.
The Bulldogs are 10-7 Overall with a 1-0 league record after beating the Trojans. The team has been forced to face a great deal of adversity early in the course of the season but was able to earn the eighth spot in the Alaska Airlines NWAACC Coaches’ Poll.
When asked about the team’s play up to this point, Head Coach Kim Culliton states, “With such a young team, I expected it to take a while before we really got firing on all cylinders. We have yet to even have a consistent 6 on the court all season due to illnesses and injury, so it has been a much slower start than we expected. Regardless, I feel this is one of the most talented groups of young ladies I have ever brought to Bellevue, as well as an amazing support staff in my assistant coaches. I am looking forward to getting everyone healthy and watching these amazing ladies start to dominate.”
Then, on Friday, Sept. 23, the Bulldogs volleyball team took the Edmonds CC Tritons in three games, 25-17, 25-14, 25-19 at home in the BC gym. It was a solid win with several solid performances: Friar once again led the attack with 12 kills hitting a .357 attack percentage; setter Krista Groves followed her with five kills and 27 assists. Defensively, outside hitter Lauren Zilke led with 13 digs, followed by Akau and Friar, both with 11 digs.
“A major part of the Bulldogs success was the serve receive which was a stunning 2.6 (out of 3.0). This is a season high for the team, and it really set the standard for the season,” said Coach Culliton. Next, the Bulldogs play Whatcom at Bellevue on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
