The Bellevue College Bulldogs took second in the Bellevue College Crossover hosted Oct. 14 and 15, losing in four to Mt. Hood in the Championship round. The Bulldogs went 3-0 in pool play defeating Chemeketa 17-25, 25-22 and 15-7, Treasure Valley 25-13 and 25-18 and Green River 27-25 and 25-18.
The Bulldogs came out of pool play number one in the Red Pool matching them up against the Shoreline Dolphins for the semi-final round. The Bulldogs went on to defeat Shoreline 25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 25-27 and 16-14. Outside hitter Laura Friar led the Bulldogs with 31 kills, followed by right side Sammy Minnig with 11, and outside hitter Lauren Zilke with seven. Zilke also had three aces in the match. However, it was the Bulldog defense that led the way for the match with five blocks from Minnig, with middle hitters Jessicca Weitman and Emina Dodic adding three and two, respectively. Zilke had a season high of 27 digs in the match, while Libero Tiva Akau had 13, and Friar, 11. Setter Krista Groves had 49 assists in the match.
With the win against Shoreline, the Bulldogs advanced to play the Mt. Hood Saints in the championship game losing in four 25-21, 13-25, 15-25 and 14-25. Friar led the Bulldogs with 22 kills followed by Minnig’s nine. Dodic and Weitman had three blocks each in the match. The Bulldog defense was led by Akau with 16 digs; Groves and defensive specialist Jessica Biesheuvel each had eight.
BC’s Laura Friar was selected tournament MVP. Tiva Akau and Krista Groves earned All Tournament Team honors.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, Oct. 19 at home against the Everett Trojans. Match begins at 7:00 p.m.
