Baseball Splits Over Weekend

Bellevue College baseball had a complete contrast in less than 24 hours as the Bulldogs lost to host Centralia and Yakima Valley on Sat. Mar. 15 before returning to Centralia the next day for two wins against the same teams.

In the opener on Saturday, Centralia topped Bellevue 2-0 as the Bulldogs had only two hits in entire game; both by Jackson May. Tristan Aasland settled in and tossed a four-hitter through seven innings in a tough luck loss.

In game two against Yakima Valley, Bellevue’s bats responded from the slow start first game by putting up four runs in the first two innings highlighted by a first inning two RBI single by Brandon McKinley scoring May and Caden Kennelly, who led off the inning with a base hit. Jackson Dulay added an RBI single in the second putting BC up 4-0. After dominating for the first three innings, Dylan Skolfield labored in the fourth, giving up three hits and a walk. A leadoff double by Yakima Valley in the following inning prompted Bellevue to go to the bullpen, but the Yaks were able to scratch out another run on a double by Eddie Bobrowski. In the sixth, Yakima’s Trayson Kostial led off the inning on a controversial hit by pitch ruling. He would then tie the game on a double by Easton Herdman. Yakima would get the game winner on a leadoff walk in the eighth. Elliot Oster had two hits for Bellevue.

The Bulldogs showed resilience on Sunday after the two Saturday losses, especially on the mound as the Bulldog pitchers combined to yield only one run while striking out 26 batters in the two wins.

The Bulldogs beat Yakima Valley 7-1 in the Sunday opener as Colin Fraser went five innings before giving way to Mason Goodson who went four innings of shutout ball while giving up only one hit. After the Yaks tied the game up at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, Bellevue answered back with a big five runs in the bottom of the inning as Jackson Dulay and McKinley each had RBI singles.

In the weekend finale Bellevue topped Centralia 7-0 as Terry Hayes Jr. struck out nine through four innings before giving way to Jacob Gabler who threw a no-hitter shutout in four innings of relief with five strikeouts. Tommy Zook closed it out with two strikeouts in a shutout ninth inning. Ollie Hogan and May hit RBI singles in the first to put BC up 2-0 which was all the pitchers needed to seal the shutout. The bats put up five more insurance runs in the final three frames as May and Elliot Oster each had two hits.

The Bulldogs wrapped up pre-season play at 11-9 and kick off league play this weekend with a doubleheader at Douglas which will be played at Whalley Park in Surrey, British Columbia. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
