Women’s Basketball Falls Late Against Peninsula

Bellevue women's basketball player

Bellevue College women’s basketball seemed to be on the verge to an upset following an upstart first half, but eventually fell 71-62 at Courter Family Athletic Pavilion. Peninsula dominated down under near the basket with several offensive putbacks during the first quarter but wasn’t enough as Bellevue’s Aysha Peter owned the first half with lights out shooting. The freshman was on fire from long range making five of six for 18 points in the half. Peter led BC to a 40-30 halftime lead as the ‘dogs went on a 19-4 run late in the second quarter to seize control that was fueled by Peter’s four consecutive three balls.

The Pirates clamped down defensively in a slower paced third quarter, outscoring Bellevue 7-0 midway through the third quarter, putting Peninsula right back in it. By the end of the third, Peninsula found themselves down by only one, 47-46. Peter was limited to only one three-point attempt in the pivotal third as BC managed to shoot just 18% on two-for-11 shooting.

The Pirates then continued the momentum with ball control underneath and overtook the Bulldog lead that was held for the majority of the game. Peninsula’s Ciera Tugade Agasiva nailed a three-pointer to give the Pirates their first lead early on at the 8:11 mark. Although Peter answered with a three pointer to tie it again, Bellevue committed five turnovers which allowed Peninsula to extend their lead to double digits at 63-52 with just a little over two minutes remaining. The lead was too much to overcome down the final two minutes as Peninsula escaped with a key come-from-behind win.

Peter had 24 points while Devynn Warns, back in the lineup after a one game absence, was solid with 17 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Bellevue is 1-2 in North Region play and 9-9 overall. They travel north to Bellingham to take on Whatcom this Sat. Jan. 18 for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
