Bellevue College women’s basketball made their debut tonight falling to South Region power, Umpqua by a score of 68-52 at the Thanksgiving Invitational hosted by Clackamas Community College. The Bulldogs, with only three returners back from a sophomore-heavy team last year, were ice cold all game from the field, shooting only 22% from the field on 17-of 79 shooting. The ‘dogs threw up thirty three-pointers on the night, choosing to score from the perimeter but cashed in on only five. BC could not capitalize on second chance putbacks either as they tallied a whopping 23 offensive boards.
After staying close to the Riverhawks in the opening quarter, Umpqua got the hot hand, outscoring Bellevue 23-7 to stake a 37-18 lead at halftime. The decisive second quarter dominance by Umpqua was the difference as BC played with Umpqua the rest of the way. The Riverhawks shot nearly 60% from the field draining three three-pointers and held a 13-6 rebounding advantage.
In the third quarter, Bellevue was eight-for-nine from the free throw line including a perfect four-for-four by sophomore Kristina Blauman but the 20 points by BC was matched by Umpqua, preventing any comeback heroics by the ‘dogs.
Jadyn Mueller led BC with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jordyn Smith pulled down 12 boards. Bellevue will take on tourney host Clackamas tomorrow at 3 p.m.
