Volleyball Takes Down Whatcom

Bellevue College swept visiting Whatcom in three sets last night by scores of 25-15, 25-23, 27-25 on Pink Night, Bellevue’s annual night dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Bulldogs dominated in set one thanks to 10 attack errors by Whatcom before things got more competitive in sets two and three.

In set two, with it all squared up at 15-15, Peytin Thompson’s kill along with an ace by Lauren Wittmers put BC up 19-16 before the Orcas charged back with a 4-1 scoring run to tie it back up at 20-20. From there the two teams would go back and forth before BC gutted it out for the win by two.

In set three Bellevue again appeared close to pulling away early on with leads of 15-11 and 19-16 but Whatcom continued to battle back and took the lead 25-24. Facing set point, the ‘dogs answered back on a Thompson swing which flipped the momentum, causing back-to-back errors by Whatcom to hand BC the sweep.

The freshman Thompson stepped up to lead the Bulldogs with 14 kills and a .367 hit percentage. Marin Mackey again was a reliable force playing all six rotations with eight kills and 13 digs in back row. Kate Hansen had 14 digs to lead BC’s defensive efforts.

Bellevue is now 5-1 in North Region play and 19-6 overall. The squad begins the second round through league play with a match at Shoreline tomorrow, Friday October 14 at 7:00 PM.
