Bulldogs Sweep Baseball Four Game Set From Skagit

Pierce Leavengood

Bellevue College baseball got a little of everything this weekend with explosive hitting, bold offensive moves, and stellar pitching as the Bulldogs swept all four games from Skagit Valley, winning by scores of 13-8 and 14-1 on Friday night and 7-0 and on Sunday.

In the opening game on Friday, the ‘dogs led 13-4 at one point in the blowout as Pierce Leavengood had two home runs including a grand slam in the fourth along with 8 RBI’s in the game. He added a two-run blast to drive in Tre’Sean Steele in the eighth as well. Nick Hovland continued his late surge at the plate with 3 hits including 2 doubles. In game two, Bellevue plated six runs in the opening frame in the win.  Ben Schulte and Austin McMinds each had 2-RBI singles in the first inning. Riley Parker had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s in the game. Cal Kirchoff went five innings for the win while allowing only three hits and striking out nine.

On Sunday, BC rode the strong pitching arms all day as the offense was not as dominant as Friday. In the opener, Trevin Hope, Aaron Barokas, and Quincy Vassar all dazzled on the mound as each surrendered only one hit in the combined shutout. The threesome allowed only one walk and punched out nine in the win. Another sophomore stepped up for BC’s offense as Kyle Green went 3-for-5 with a home run and double in nearly identical spots in left field.  Bellevue got on the board in exciting fashion in the second as Steele laid down a perfect bunt on a bases loaded suicide squeeze in which he also beat out for a base hit. In game two, another threesome combined on an almost more dominant outing as Nate Butcher, Connor Portugal, and Michael Attalah threw a one-hitter. They fanned ten as Butcher gave up the sole run, but was unearned in the fourth. Troy Baunsgard homered and had 2 RBI’s while Hovland added another 2 hits. Josiah Santiago had a breakout game with 2 hits and scored 3 runs in the leadoff position.

The four game sweep keeps Bellevue just one game behind Everett for the North Region title as both teams have four to play. Bellevue hosts Olympic this Friday June 5 at 4:00 p.m.
