Women’s Basketball Splits Back-to-Back Affair With Skagit Valley

Mo Bungay

Bellevue College women’s basketball played a rare back-to-back contest against the same opponent, defeating Skagit Valley79-63 at home last night before falling tonight 62-60 in Mount Vernon.  The Friday game, which was a make up for an originally scheduled May 12 date, featured two breakout quarters for the Bulldogs, which ultimately paced their win. BC outscored the Cardinals 29-13 in the first quarter behind the hot shooting of Mo Bungay at the free throw line. The sophomore was 5-for-6 from the line and added a three-pointer with 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal in the opening quarter. In the third quarter, Addy Clabby poured in 8 points and dished out 4 assists while freshman Brianna Byrnes had 7 points in the quarter. The 26-18 scoring difference in the third gave BC a 17-point cushion to work with for the remainder of the game. Bungay’s 17 points paced Bellevue.

The Bulldogs could not keep up their momentum from the night prior in tonight’s loss to the Cardinals. Up for the majority of the game, Bellevue, while not in commanding control as they were the night before, had the win in their hands throughout the entire fourth quarter until the final seconds. With a 60-59 lead with 11 seconds remaining, two missed free throws in addition to a last second foul enabled Skagit’s Grace Shaddle to capitalize, making the front end of two free throws to tie the game before following up with another bucket in the closing seconds to steal the win from Bellevue.

A surprise loss by Whatcom tonight kept Bellevue in first place despite BC’s loss tonight. The squad sits at an 11-4 mark and hosts Peninsula this Monday on Memorial Day for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
