
The Bellevue College women’s basketball team defeated Whatcom tonight 68-61 at Courter Family Athletic Pavilion. In an unusual scoring affair, the Bulldogs scored only 13 total points in the first and fourth quarters but amassed 55 points just before and after halftime. After one quarter of play, BC led 6-2 in a slowdown game in which Whatcom had only four attempts from the field while Bellevue had three total shots. Mo Bungay and Kate Rutledge were both 1-for-1 from three-point range which accounted for all of BC’s scoring in the unusual first quarter.
In the second quarter, sophomore Barbora Sutara took control of the game underneath with 6 rebounds and 8 points as BC piled on 28 points to take a 34-32 halftime lead.
The scoring spree continued in the third quarter as the ‘dogs outscored Whatcom 27-21 before the cold-shooting fourth quarter in which the teams combined for a 6-for-32 mark. Bellevue’s scoring in the middle periods salvaged the win as they managed to shoot 2-for-15 in the fourth quarter. Whatcom did come within four at 65-61 with :34 to play on a shot by Madison Chisman but free throws by Addy Clabby and Bungay extended the lead to 68-61 in the final seconds to end any last second Orca threat.
Bellevue is now 3-1 and tied with Whatcom for first place in the North Region.
