Giving up 60 points in the first half is going to be difficult for any team to overcome, as the Bellevue College men’s basketball team could not recover from a 60-37 halftime deficit as the host Edmonds Tritons topped Bellevue 93-72 last night at Edmonds. The Bulldogs managed to outscore the Tritons in the second half 35-33 but the damage was already done early in the game as Edmonds got 57 shots off in the first half and made 44% including eight three-pointers. The Tritons put up 23 attempts from three-point range but also got multiple second opportunities with 9 offensive rebounds to control the game offensively for the half.
The separation began early as Edmonds jumped out 14-3 in the opening minutes and never looked back. At one point Bellevue appeared on the verge of coming back on a three-pointer by Trey Lawrence, making it 34-22 with 11:47 left in the first half. However the Tritons stretched the lead back up, and at one point increased the 12-point lead to 27 with just over two minutes to go. The Bulldogs had a three minute period without scoring as Edmonds went on an 11-0 run.
In the second half, Bellevue nearly matched Edmonds’ 11-0 run by going on a 9-0 stretch which quickly turned a blowout into a game. Gerald Hood’s basket midway through the half made it 62-53 and the Bulldogs were down by a single digit with plenty of game remaining. A pair of free throws and another bucket by Hood allowed BC to claw back to 66-59. Mistakes then plagued Bellevue as three turnovers and two fouls quickly turned the narrow 7-point margin back to 14 with 5:00 to go at which point the Bulldogs could not recover.
Hood led Bellevue with 20 points while Tijohn Rodde and Trey Lawrence had 7 rebounds apiece and 11 and 12 points respectively. Bellevue will host Olympic College this Sunday February 23 at 3:00 p.m.
