Bellevue College baseball opened up fall season with a bang by sweeping Edmonds in a doubleheader scrimmage Friday September 20 followed by individual highlights at the NWAC Showcase at Lower Columbia College the next day.
Due to NWAC scrimmage regulations, no official score was kept in the wins over Edmonds. Eric Anderson, Connor Portugal, and Dac Archer showed they look to be sophomores who will help carry the club with standout performances in the scrimmages. Another sophomore, Riley Gill made a statement early by belting the first pitch of the 2019 fall season to left center for a double.
The following day, Gill mesmerized scouts again with a highlight defensive play as the explosive sophomore outfielder robbed a West Region hitter of a home run in the first inning of the showcase game.
Several BC players stood out at the showcase as Tre’Sean Steele recorded the fastest 60 time for the region at 6.98 seconds, running uphill on an awkward running terrain comprised of artificial turf which transitioned to natural grass right in the middle of the 60 yard dash line.
Michael Attalah and Trevin Hope were two of the most impressive pitchers in the event throwing in the upper 80-90 mph range. Hope was especially intriguing to pro baseball scouts as he flashed outstanding secondary pitches as well. The 6′ 7″ prospect who hasn’t pitched in over a year due to arm surgery showed he is back better than ever.
Gill and Garrett Gants showed good swings both in the Edmonds scrimmage and the showcase to solidify themselves as two of the better college prospects in the NWAC. Nick Hovland put on the best show during batting practice, belting several home runs halfway up the trees in left field at the showcase.
The Bulldogs will host their annual scout day before their second scrimmage of the fall this Friday September 27 against Tacoma. Scout day events including the 60 yard dash and extended batting practice will begin at approximately 2:00 on Friday.
