Vancouver Island Tops Bellevue Women

With many home for the holidays, the Bellevue women’s basketball team hit the hardwood tonight to get back into the flow, but fell 64-46 in non-league action against Vancouver Island University. The game, played at a neutral site (Northwest University in Kirkland) due to gym construction at Bellevue, illustrated the difference size and experience makes as VIU, a four-year school, had a size and age advantage, outrebounding the ‘dogs 48-29. VIU’s Emily Clark was a perfect example of the mismatch, as the 23-year old fifth-year senior who stands 5-10 had 17 rebounds and 16 points to dominate inside. She had six offensive boards and was 7-for-10 shooting.

Bellevue remained in the game until the final quarter, in part due to low shooting percentages by both teams. Vancouver went on a run early in the fourth quarter stretching the lead from eight to 20 as the Bulldogs ran out of steam. Jahdai Alcombrack led BC with 14 points. VIU goes to 7-3 overall while Bellevue fell to 3-5. The Bulldogs get no rest as they now head up to Mount Vernon for the annual Skagit Holiday Tourney, opening up tomorrow against South Puget Sound at 3:00 p.m.
