The Bellevue College Bulldogs softball team has been busy this past week, playing six games over four days. On Thursday, April 18, the Bulldogs hosted previously unbeaten Douglas College and swept the Royals by scores of 5-3 and 12-0. The Dawgs won the first game 5-3 behind the solid pitching of Brielle Bray. With Bellevue behind 1-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning and two outs, sophomore centerfielder Miranda Granger stepped up to the plate and hammered a bases-loaded home run that put the Dawgs ahead 5-3 and gave Bellevue its 66th straight North Region win. In game two, Hannah Sauget held Douglas to zero runs while scattering just four hits. Offensively, the Dawgs put a charge in the ball and scored 12 runs off 11 hits, with Brittany Jacobsen getting a home run for Bellevue.
Then, the Bulldogs traveled to Yakima the weekend of April 20-21 to play in the Annual Swinging for a Cure Crossover Tournament and won three games on Saturday, before losing one on Sunday en route to a 3-1 weekend. The Tournament helped raise $1,000 for the Wellness House of Yakima, an organization providing support and a safe place for those whose lives have been affected by the diagnosis of a life-altering illness, such as cancer, either personally or a loved one.
In the first game Saturday, the Dawgs beat Big Bend 8-2, again with the strong pitching of freshman Sauget. Autumn Isaacson went 3 for 3, and Meagan Ransier 2-3 in that game. In the second game of the day, Bray picked up the win, giving up just two hits as the Bulldogs beat another East Region powerhouse team, Columbia Basin, 10-1 in five innings.
The third game of the day proved to be the biggest challenge as the Dawgs squared off against Yakima Valley. In a pitcher’s duel, the Dawgs finally broke through to score in the fifth off a base hit and three stolen bases by Isaacson. Bellevue added two more in the seventh on hits by Lindsey West, Sauget, and Bray. Sauget picked up a well-earned victory giving up just three hits over seven innings.
On Sunday, the Bulldogs’ long loss of the weekend came at the hands of Southern Region power, Mt. Hood. The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead, but in the second inning, behind four Bulldogs errors, the Saints scored seven unearned runs. Bellevue was unable to overcome the early errors and took the loss 10-5.
On Saturday, April 27, the Bulldogs, now at 13-0 league, 24-4 on the season, host Everett CC (6-6, 17-13) in a North Region doubleheader at Bellevue Softball Field. Games slated for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
