Bellevue Takes Douglas Series Behind Stellar Pitching and Hot Bat of Max Brown

Bellevue College baseball took three of four games and lost their only game of the series in the final inning to Douglas College. Bellevue won a pair at home on Monday April 8 by scores of 1-0 and 3-2 before traveling north of the border to lose 3-2 and win 13-2.

The week was highlighted by the nine innings of shutout pitching by two pitchers coming back from injury (Nick Kiel seven strikouts in five innings, Alex Hatch three stirkeouts in two
innings) and a third pitcher making his college debut (Nick Kassuba, four strikeouts in two innings earning a save in his first college outing). Kiel and Kassuba carried Bellevue in their first win. In game two on Monday Bellevue scored three times in the first three innings behind Max Brown and Anthony Flatt’s two-hit performances and the stellar relief pitching of Cody Culp. Culp entered in the sixth inning holding on to a 3-2 lead and retired 11 batters in a row to throw 3 and 2/3 innings of perfect relief.

On Tuesday, two of the top left-handed pitchers in the region squared off as Bellevue’s Jake Reppert was outdueled by Douglas’ Cory Duggan, who had not given up a run all year entering today’s game. The Bulldogs tied the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth and was led by Brown who went 3-for-3 off Duggan. The Bulldogs lost in the bottom of the final inning on a successful suicide squeeze play by Douglas. In game two, Brown continued his hot hitting going 3-for-4 (6-for-7 on the day) while fellow outfielder Jordan Richartz collected three hits as well. Flatt had three RBI’s as well in the 13-2 win that ended due to the ten run rule.

Bellevue welcomes Shoreline Community College for a doubleheader this Saturday April 13 at 1PM before traveling to Seattle’s Meridian Park to play Shoreline in the final two games of the four-game series on Sunday April 14.
