Bellevue College’s Bulldog baseball squad continued their stretch of challenging games on the road against top-ranked teams as they split a 4-game series at Mt. Hood over the weekend, getting swept on Saturday by scores of 7-4 and 7-2 before sweeping the Saints on Sunday 17-6 and 4-3.
On Saturday, the Saints came out swinging early, scoring 6 runs on 10 hits in the first three innings. The Bulldogs were in the game down 4-2 in the third. With two outs in the bottom of the third, a tag play at the plate would have been the third out. However the ball was dropped on the close play, enabling two Mt. Hood runners to score, which sealed the victory for the Saints. Cody Edwards and Kyle Johnson were 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs. Tyler Cox hit a solo home run in the 5th, his first home run this year. In game two, Ian Parmley took the mound against the Saints; a team he shutout for 5 innings in relief last year to earn the Bulldogs a berth in the NWAACC title game. A potential home run that was kept in play by the wind last May helped Parmley earn a win the last time he faced the Saints. The wind did not help his cause this year as a three-run home run sealed the win for Mt. Hood.
On Sunday, the Bulldogs swung the hot bats, pounding out 21 hits in a 17-6 win. Bellevue scored 7 runs in the second inning to take control of the game. They also tacked on another 8 runs in the 8th inning with 7 of the 9 hitters in the lineup getting base hits that inning. Ian McKay had four hits while Parmley, Nick Smith, and Kyle Johnson each had three. Kyle Swannack earned the win. Swannack pitched five innings and gave up only three hits. None of the five runs of Swannack were earned. In the nightcap, Bellevue earned a split in the series with a go-ahead run in the top of the final inning. McKay led off with a single and advanced on a throwing error by the catcher, then advanced all the way home on a second error by the right fielder on the same play. Blake Fulghum sealed the win by pitching three innings of relief. It was his second win this week after throwing a no-hitter vs. Miles City earlier in the week. The no-hitter by Fulghum was the second no-hitter this year by Bellevue’s pitchers.
