The Bellevue College men’s soccer team played host Wenatchee Valley College Knights on Monday, Oct. 29 to make-up a game that had been rescheduled from September. The Bulldogs began the match maintaining possession, but lacking the chances to capitalize. Pushing players forward to advance left the Bulldogs exposed for a quick counterattack from the Knights, and a swift goal in the 19th minute put WVC up 1-0. The Bulldogs found themselves in a too familiar situation being down 1-0 at half after out-playing their opponent.
It was not until the 60th minute that Bellevue freshman co-captain David Lovas put in the equalizer to make the score 1-1. For Lovas, it was his second goal in two matches. “David is a hard worker on and off the ball,” said BC assistant coach Kiko Magana. “David leads by example and is a crafty player with pace which makes him a threat every time he has possession of the ball.” The Bulldogs’ hard work paid off late in the second half when sophomore Kyle Campbell put in the game-winning goal in the 87th minute from a low cross from freshman Bryant Maxey. The Bulldogs finished the match with a score of 2-1, and their second league win. BC outshot WVC 17 to 7. Freshman goalkeeper Demetre Skepetaris recorded the win with four saves.
The Bulldogs headed across the Sound on Saturday, Nov. 3, to take on the undefeated West Region champions, Peninsula College. As it turned out, the Bellevue men’s team would say goodbye to its 2012 season by playing the best game of the year resulting in a 1-1 tie. In the first half, the Bulldogs and Pirates both played strong defensive games which kept each team scoreless through half time. However, just three minutes into the second half, Bellevue’s Juan Ramirez found the back of the net and scored the first goal of the match that put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Peninsula’s tying goal didn’t arrived until minute 55, and neither team was able to score after that. Bellevue was glad to hand Peninsula the Pirates’ only tie of the season.
“I feel really proud of every single one of my players,” said head coach Tao Shen. “We came really close to beating the best teams of the league, such as Peninsula and Highline, which makes us want to try even harder next year.”
