After Saturday games got rained out, BC’s final weekend series with Skagit Valley College got pushed back to Sunday May 6th, and Monday May 7th.
On Sunday, the series opened at Bellevue’s Courter Field. In game one of the series, Bellevue’s Adrian Sampson threw an impressive complete game shutout, allowing just two hits. Sampson picked up 10 strikeouts, increasing his league leading total to 96 along with remaining perfect on the season with a 10-0 record. Bellevue’s offense scored eight runs on 13 hits highlighted by a Colin Hering four-RBI effort including a double and home run.
In game two of the series, the Bellevue offense exploded again for nine runs on 16 hits. Tyler Baumgartner led the Bulldogs with four hits while Dustin Breshears and Jerad Casper each added three apiece. Bryan Burgher picked up the win on the mound, improving to 5-1 on the year.
On Monday the Bulldogs traveled to Skagit Valley to close out the series. In game three, Matt Cooper tossed a complete game shutout allowing three hits while striking out nine. Hering paced the Bellevue offense with three hits leading a 13 hit attack by the Bulldogs en route to a 9-0 win. In game four, the Bulldogs opted to end regular season play in dramatic fashion. Trailing 5-3 heading into the top of the 9th, Marc Dickerson led off the inning with a solo home run putting the Bulldogs within one. Then with two outs and a runner on 2nd down by one, Breshears came up with a clutch RBI double to tie up the game. In the top of the 11th inning, the Bulldogs unleashed and put up seven runs, four coming from a Hering grand slam home run that ricocheted off the light pole in right field. Jonathan Humphrie, who entered the game in the 6th, was able to keep the Skagit Valley offense scoreless for 5 1/3 innings picking up the win making big pitch after big pitch. After closing out the 11th, the Bulldogs secured the sweep with a 12-5 win.
As the Bulldogs have concluded regular season play, the rest of the North Region is set to play one more final 4-game series, none with more playoff implications than the Everett vs. Edmonds matchup. As the Bulldogs will sit back and watch during their bye weekend, guaranteed to enter the North Region tournament as the #2 seed, the Bulldogs still have a chance to win the region title and pick up the #1 seed if Edmonds can win two or more games over Everett. The #1 seed does not just crown the regional champion, but also grants an automatic bid to the NWAACC Championships.
BC sits at 19-5 in league play (33-8 overall). All stats and game information can be found at www.pointstreak.com.
