This past week, the Bellevue Bulldogs depth was put to test as the team was scheduled for six games over the course of four days. The Bulldogs continued their strong play over the week and won five of the six games played.
On Thursday, March 22, Bellevue traveled over the mountains to Yakima for a double header with Yakima Valley CC, a reschedule from earlier in the season. The Bulldogs prevailed in both games by the scores of 13-3, and 14-1. The Bulldog offense enjoyed a total of 32 hits in the two games including sophomore Jerad Casper’s second home run of the year.
Saturday, March 24, the Bulldogs headed south for a doubleheader at Tacoma CC. In game one against Tacoma, the Bulldogs fell behind early and found themselves down 3-0 heading into the ninth. With two outs, the Bulldog offense was able to put two runs on the board after an RBI single from Colin Hering, but Tacoma was able to hold off the late rally and Bellevue suffered a 3-2 loss.
In game two against Lane CC, Bellevue ace Adrian Sampson took the mound and was sharp as usual. Sampson threw seven innings allowing just two hits while striking out 12. The Bulldogs offense pounded out six runs on 13 hits highlighted by Brady Kerr’s three-hit game. Lane threatened in the bottom of the ninth plating five runs, but with runners in scoring position, Bellevue was able to record the final out and secure the 6-5 victory. Sampson earned his league-leading fourth win of the season improving to 4-0.
Sunday, Bellevue again headed back to Tacoma, this time to the field at Mt. Tahoma High School for a re-match with Lane CC. Once more, the Bellevue offense showed up scoring seven runs on 15 hits lead by Hering’s four hits and Marc Dickerson’s two RBI’s. Bellevue pitcher Steven Johnson picked up the win in relief while throwing four innings of no-hit baseball. Bellevue won the game by a score of 7-4.
In the final game of the week, the Bulldogs faced off with Pierce College. Jonathan Humphrie took the mound and was impressive in his first start of the season allowing just two runs over six innings of work, including working out of a sixth inning jam. Willy Reel earned the win in relief tossing three innings. Dustin Breshears and Hering led the offense with two hits each en route to the 4-2 win.
The weekend marked the conclusion of non-league play for Bellevue. The Bulldogs improved their record to 14-3 on the year, and garnered all first place votes in the recent Alaska Airlines NWAACC Coaches’ Poll. The team is also ranked third overall in the Pacific Association (all of WA, OR, CA), and 19th nationally. This upcoming weekend, March 31-April 1, opens up Northern Region play. On Saturday, Bellevue travels to Bremerton to take on Olympic College as the team looks to defend their Northern Region crown from the 2011 season. Olympic will hosts Bellevue on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the Kitsap Fairgrounds in Bremerton, then on Sunday, Olympic will come to Bellevue’s Courter Field for two more games, with the first one beginning at 1 p.m. This same four game series format will be used throughout league play.
