The Bellevue College baseball team added three more to the win column over the weekend of April 6 and 7, while dropping only one to Douglas College. The loss marks the first loss of Northern divisional play for the Bulldogs now holding a 7-1 league record, 21-4 overall season.
On Friday, the Bulldogs traveled to Whalley Little League Park in British Columbia, Canada, the home site of Douglas. In game one, Adrian Sampson took the mound for Bellevue and tossed a complete seven-inning game, allowing just two runs while striking out seven, and picking up his league-leading sixth Win. Bellevue’s offense was paced by two hits from freshman Dustin Breshears and two RBIs from Jordan Richartz. Jerad Casper scored two runs for the dogs in the 4-2 victory.
In game two of the double header, Bellevue fell behind 3-1 after a three-run fifth inning was posted by Douglas. Bellevue entered the ninth down 6-4, but was able to push the game into extra innings by tying up the game at 6-6. In the 11th inning the Dogs took the lead 7-6, but Douglas was able to score the tying, then winning, runs in the bottom frame setting up BC’s loss to Douglas, 7-8. Bellevue’s Steven Johnson suffered the loss in relief. The Bellevue offense produced seven runs on 13 hits, three hits each from Tyler Baumgartner and Marc Dickerson.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs came out looking for vengeance on their home turf. Bellevue was firing on all cylinders as the pitching, defense, and offense were all on point. In the third game, Bellevue provided six runs on ten hits, which was more than enough for starter Bryan Burgher. Burgher threw a complete game striking out seven Douglas Royals and improved to 3-0 on the season. Baumgartner and Colin Hering each turned in 3-4 games, while Brady Kerr and Max Brown added two hits each for a 6-1 Bellevue win.
In the final game of the series, Bellevue’s starting pitcher Jeff Gonzales stole the show. Gonzales picked up the win putting in eight innings of work shutting out the Royals. The Bulldogs’ Willy Reel came in to pitch in the ninth with two runners on and preserved the complete game shutout. Hering led the Bulldogs offensive attack turning in another two-hit game, including a double, triple, and two RBIs. Anthony Flatt added two hits as Bellevue cruised to the 7-0 victory.
The Bulldogs have dropped in the standings due to the lone loss of the season. Both Everett and Edmonds sit at 4-0 (both teams have had bye weeks) with Bellevue sitting comfortably at 7-1. The Bulldogs are set to take on the Shoreline Dolphins for another four-game series, April 14 and 15. Saturday Bellevue hosts Shoreline at BC’s Courter Field with a 1 p.m. start, then Sunday the Bulldogs travel to Shoreline’s Meridian Park for the final two games of the series, again with a 1 p.m. start.
