Bellevue College baseball went 2-2 over the weekend against second-place Everett CC. The exciting series featured both teams exchanging heroic wins in the bottom half of the final inning in addition to three of the four games being decided by one run. On Friday Aprill 22, Bellevue hosted the Trojans and lost the opener 4-3 before winning the nightcap in a twelve-inning thriller, 5-4. In game one, Bellevue jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a double by Kyle Conwell, who also doubled again and scored in the third on an RBI double by Tyler Cox to make it 3-0 Bulldogs. Everett battled back and took the lead in the sixth that they never surrendered. In game two, Bellevue again jumped out 2-0 in the first on a two-run home run by Andy Smith; his sixth of the year. The Bulldog bats were silenced for six innings until singles by Tyler Baumgartner and Kyle Johnson tied the score at 4-4 in the eighth. Neither team threatened until the bottom of the twelfth inning as Conwell led off the inning with a single and later scored on a single down the left field line by Cox. Andrew Groves threw seven and a third innings in relief and gave up only one run for the win.
On Saturday April 23, Kyle Swannack continued his dominance over the North Region with his third complete game shutout, defeating Everett 5-0. Swannack pitched out of bases-loaded jams with less than two outs in both the third and fourth innings to preserve the shutout. Andy Smith scored three runs while Baumgartner, Conwell, and Dan Schmidt had two hits apiece. In game two, Bellevue’s hitters went scoreless for the first six innings until chipping away at a 5-0 deficit with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Zach Aaker scored the first run and drove in the second in the eighth before Baumgartner tied the game 5-5 in the top of the ninth with a three-run blast to right field. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Mike Gange singled home Dave Amberson all the way from first base to salvage a series split for the Trojans.
Although the 13-game win streak dating back to March 28th is over, the Bulldogs remain in first place with a two-game lead over Everett with a 14-2 record. Bellevue’s next action will be this weekend for a four-game set against Olympic College with doubleheaders on Saturday April 30 (at Kitsap Fairgrounds in Silverdale, WA) and at home on Sunday May 1. Start times for both days is 1:00 PM.
