Bellevue College baseball’s hitters continued their record-setting team home run mark by popping out seven home runs in a doubleheader sweep over host Edmonds by scores of 4-0 and 11-9. The home runs on the day overshadowed the pitching heroics of Kyle Swannack, who tossed a two-hit complete game shutout with nine strikeouts in game one. The biggest hit of the day was actually a single by freshman Tyler Baumgartner who broke a scoreless game with a two-out single to drive in Andy Smith and Kyle Conwell in the sixth inning of game one. Kyle Johnson followed with one of three home runs on the day for insurance runs. In game two, Bellevue jumped out to a 6-1 lead through three innings. Conwell and Tyler Cox hit back-to-back home runs on consecutive pitches in the top of the third. Johnson hit the third home run in the inning; a towering shot that cleared the 100 foot-high fence in left-center field. Edmonds’ offense battled back to take the lead 9-8. Nick Smith homered to tie it back up in the seventh, the teams sixth home run on the day. Conwell hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth which proved to be the game-winning RBI before Johnson smashed his third home run of the day in the ninth. Andrew Groves came in with two Triton runners aboard with no outs in the seventh and promptly recorded three straight outs to kill Edmonds’ rally. Groves blanked Edmonds in the eighth then struck out the first two Edmonds hitters before inducing a fly out for a perfect 1-2-3 ninth. The final game of the four-game series is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday April 5 at 3PM at Courter Field.
